How a single counter became a name retailers in twenty states ask for.

Burrabazar in the early nineties was crowded, fast, and unforgiving. Wholesale shops opened and shut every season. What stayed open were the ones the retailers trusted — shopkeepers who picked up the phone, packed properly, and never argued about a rupee here or there.

Shri Santlal Gupta Ji ran his shop that way from day one. A saree shop owner in Patna would call for ten dozen saree covers; the parcel would reach in three days, packed clean, exactly as described. Word travelled the way it does in our trade — over phone, then fax, then SMS, and now WhatsApp.

Today his sons handle the trade. Prem Ratan Gupta Ji runs the godown and stock. Sanjay Gupta Ji is the voice on WhatsApp — the one retailers from Guwahati to Coimbatore message a photo to, and get a rate back the same day. The categories have grown — saree covers gave way to suit covers, blouse covers, welcome dupattas, bandarwar, shagun lifafa, fancy pouches, bangle kits, laddu gopal poshak — but the rule is unchanged.
